109 - Mission, Vision, & Purpose
Aug 21, 2023Hey, welcome so very much for my Thursday live teachings. My name is Nick Brown, I am the founder of cooking physics. You see, I help professionals. And chefs be happy and successful as they build a culture of growth, development and learning in their lives and become effective leaders. You see, I'm trying to build a community of chefs, where collaboration is encouraged where the growth and success of others is celebrated. I want to have a community that feels respects the person as much as chefs do their food, and that chefs are commended as much for their leadership as they are for their menus. So today, I'm going to be talking a little bit about how to create that culture of growth, development and learning. And the first thing you need to do, you know, last week, I talked a lot about how to build clarity, and how to create that vision. But at the same time, I kind of going over it. And I was thinking, well, what's the difference between vision? What's the difference between your mission or your purpose? You know, what is it goals? Or what is the standard? Or how does that all kind of come together to really help you to progress. And so that's what I'm going to be talking about in this live teaching. So the first thing I want to talk to you about is, is your vision, what exactly is the vision, so when I'm thinking about a vision, I think about that super long term, kind of vision that, that mindset it that you've got, that's that hope, those those dreams of what your life could become, you know, in, I've heard once talk about how a vision is like, you're looking at the horizon. And that horizon is your is your goal, okay? That's your vision, that goal. And the thing about having a vision, having a goal that is set that far out, is that as you're starting to progress towards that goal, your vision begins to expand even more, you'll never actually reach that horizon. Because as you get to that horizon, it, it's a new horizon further down the road. So it's not to say that you shouldn't have those goals and dreams in that aspect. But if you do have that kind of a goal in your life, call it what it is, it's your vision, it is your hope, it is your dreams of how your life could become. And it is very important that you have that because the more clear that that becomes the the better, that it feels like you can actually feel how it's going to be, you know what you're going to be doing, you know what the people that are going to be around you. That vision is huge. And that's going to give you that hope and that clarity, moving forward. But your mission is not your vision. Your mission is more of the actual gold. Your mission is a finite thing. It is a direct thing. It is a you know those smart goals specific, measurable, achievable, realistic, and time oriented. It is that I'm going to get to this location by this time and I know I can do it, or at least I mean, I may not know 100% But I'm pretty sure or that I can get it because, you know, it's achievable, okay? So your mission is, imagine your mission as being like, the mountain that you're going to reach on your way to that horizon, that hill, or that mountain, or whatever it is that I'm going to reach the top of that mountain. And so you go on, and you get going, I'm gonna reach the top of that mountain, it's gonna be, you know, I know, it's this long, I know, it's this far away. So let's go and take me about this long to get there. And you know, you can do it because, you know, you've, you've hit lots and lots of milestones on the way leading up to this point. So it's a goal that you achieve, that you can achieve that you believe you can achieve. But it's very specific, it's very measurable, once you hit that goal gratulations, you have completed your mission. Now you need to create a new mission, okay, and that mission is going to bring you ever so closer to that vision that you have that horizon. But also when you get to that top of that mountain, and you look out, and you have an and you look out and you see that horizon, that horizon has now expanded, and it becomes even more beautiful. And so from that point, you make your next destination, you make your next goal you make you make your next mission, and you move forward that way. What is the purpose? Why are you doing it, that's really what your purpose is, is your why it's the your purpose is the thing that gives you the energy for you to be able to accomplish all of your goals, to be able to accomplish that mission, so that you can create that reality of your vision. So those that purpose, that is why that's the internal portion of it, it's, it has nothing to do with the external, or what's around you, it's why you're doing it. People have all sorts of purposes, could it be an altruistic purpose, you know, for the betterment of other people, I'm going to accomplish this for the betterment of other people, that's great. It could be very, incredibly selfish, I want to do it because I want to become the best, I want to be the very best that I possibly can be. Another one would be for your family, I want to do it for your spouse, your significant other your partner, your kids, you know, when you're young, it's I want to do it, because my parents, you know, my parents were proud of me. And it could just be flat out because I want to make money, I want to be a millionaire. And that's what that's my purpose, you know, it's always good to try and define really well what that purpose is, the more personal it becomes, the more the more emotion that comes into it will help you really push forward during those obstacles that are going to be happening on on that way towards your mission. Okay. And the last thing is the standards, the standards are the things that you do each and every day. They are the things that help you achieve your mission. Okay. So, you know, continuing on with this whole thing is is reaching the horizon, that standard is putting one step in front of the other, you may not actually achieve your mission in the time that you said that you were going to do it. You may have gotten sidetracked and, you know, got misled a little bit or saw another thing and so you kind of veered away from your your original mission you tried and you started going after another thing. But as long as you are steadily moving forward, as long as you are making those steps and increasing and getting closer and closer. Those standards will help you achieve your mission. They will help you achieve your goal. And they will help you feel like your purpose is meaningful to you and that you are completing your purpose. Now, all of these things change over time. Like I say, You reached the top of the mountain your vision expands and you realize that, you know, it looks really beautiful over there. But this mountain was blocking the view that it's over here. And so now I want to move this way. That's fine. You know, as as you're making your steps and as you're as you're moving forward. And you realize that that mountain may be a little bit too tough right now. And you're not going to get there and you start to feel the Scourge, switch up your mission. either increase the timeline that it's going to take for you to get there. Or put that one on hold Pick a new goal that's going to be closer that you can hit, and turn that into your new mission is kind of a submission of the actual full goal. So the important thing is, is that you don't get discouraged. As you're moving forward. You know, make sure that the, that you have your vision, and you understand what the vision is, the vision is almost an unachievable goal. Because it is like that perfect. Perfect life, it's not going to happen, there's going to be difficulties that happen, you know, things are going to, things are going to, it's not going to go 100% The way you want it to. But having that vision and making sure that you understand that that's just the vision.
That's, that's the Holy Grail. That's the, you know, it may be unattainable, but boy, you can get super close to it. Okay. And understand that as you get closer, your vision is going to expand. And so it's always going to be a little bit too far out of reach. But those missions, keep up on those missions. Always try and remember that when you get to that end, and even on the way each step each, each is a little bit the AGO, you're always looking back. You know, I love the outdoors. And one of the things they always talk about is whenever you're doing hiking, every once in a while look behind you take in the view that is behind you. For two reasons, one, so you can see how far you've come. And the other reason is, if by chance, you start going the wrong path, and you start to lose your way and you start to become lost. You have a vision of how it looks before. And so you can turn around and as you start walking, you're like, I remember seeing this, because you look behind and you saw the scenery as it was at that point. Okay, I remember that. And at that point, I knew I was on the I was really close to the trail. Okay, I kind of got lost at this point. So you can start looking around in that area. Look back, see how far you've come. Also pay attention to where you were at in each moment of your life. That will help you to stay on track. To be able to not lose yourself too far. If you start going off on a tangent on your missions, and on your vision. Just remember that those standards, those daily steps, they could be things like, you know, if your vision is to be you know, a three Michelin star chef, okay. And you want to be working in Paris, France, okay. And you just you just have this huge amount and enormous vision. Can you achieve that? Yes, you can. So begin to understand that and start realizing what do you need to do to be able to achieve that? Well, first, I need to become an executive chef. Or I need to become a sous chef, or I need to come up with my menu or things like that those are going to be your goals, and what are going to be your standards, your standards are going to be you know, the, the core chef standards, which are things like taste everything, or improve everything that you touch. Cleanliness is very important. Or it could be other things like constant learning and reading and and study and courses and find a mentor and get with a mentor and meet with them, you know, once a week or something like that, you know, those are your standards that even if you don't quite hit that three star Michelin chef working with your own restaurant in Paris, France, okay. Those standards are going to continually get you closer and closer to that end vision. You know, you may realize at that point that hey, I don't want to be in Paris. I just want to be where I'm at. Or you know what that Michelin is not quite exactly what I'm shooting for. I want it to be more of a family groups kind of a thing where people come in They bring their families, but you still have those core standards that are, you know, learning every single day, and moving forward. So loving your life loving who you are, having that vision, and make sure that vision is very broad. Make sure that vision, you know, doesn't entail just you in the restaurant, but also, who are you with? What kind of friends do you have at that time? What kind of staff? Do you have? You know, family? Are you going to have a family? What are you going to be doing with your family, you know, how is your family going to be involved in that, that situation, you know, making sure that you are constantly bringing everybody in. So that it's not only a singular vision, what isn't an all encompassing vision of what your life is going to become? To help you kind of achieve that, you know, one of the, one of the first couple of places that I worked at, I saw this document sitting there and it says, you know, three for 30, monthly plan. World is that so so I looked it up. And then I looked at it, I'm like three, you know, and it was very basic, it was, you know, three goals. You try and complete 30 minutes in 30 days, in one month. I'm like, okay, cool. So I started playing around with that. And I was like, Well, what kind of goals should I have, and, and things like that, and I was really struggling to, to really fine tune what, how that goal sheet could help me. And so over the years, I have worked on this goal sheet, and I have really kind of, you know, tried to figure it out, so that it would work well, for me, something that would really help me to achieve my vision. And my vision is really a lot to do with work life balance, I want to be able to, you know, enjoy the things that I do, I want to be able to have time with my family that I very much love, I want to be able to do, you know, the things the other things that I love that are that are personal. And, you know, that are my passions, that that isn't suited that that may not be teaching or other things like that. And I realized that, you know, sometimes I would focus too much on one thing, and I'd lose sight of others and, or I'd focus on the other thing, and that, you know, my work would suffer or focus on family or, you know, and things like that. And it was always this give and take. And like I understand that there is going to be some give and take throughout your life. You know, there are times where work is going to take more priority, there's times where family is going to take my priority, but what I found was, it was getting way out of whack, where I would only focus on that and everything else would just start falling apart. Instead of you know, focusing on that and knowing that was going to be for a short time, while still maintaining everything else that was going on in my life. So at this point, is when kind of that thought came to me as far as this three for 30 goal sheet again, like Well, there are really three different things that I really care about. The first one is my preferred professional development, you know, who I am as a person or what am I doing as as a as a person? How do I earn money? How do I gain? You know, my livelihood? The other thing was, is my own personal development? Who am I as a person? Who am I as a husband? Who am I as a, you know, a member of the community? You know, who am I? Not just what do I do but who am I? And the third was my passions, the things that that didn't involve so much other people it was the things that were just purely mine you know, some of my passions are music. I love music. Some of the other passions are the outdoors, or building things I love working with wood I love construction and things like that. So you know those are my passions, I love reading and not just reading for reading just for reading sake. I love personally I love fantasy. And I love sci fi. So So those are the kinds of things and I'm sitting here thinking I'm like, you know I really like to have these goals and and stuff like that. So I created and revamped this three for 30 sheet. And I'm calling it the three for 30 Persistence goal sheet. And I want to be able to give you guys this goal sheet for free. So I'm gonna put it up here, right here.
This goal setting sheet is all about how to maintain that balance in your life. It's helping you to make one goal in each area of your life, your professional development, your personal development, and your passion development. So that as you're working on this for this for, you know, these three goals for this one month, that they will help you maintain that work, life and passion balance, so that you are happy, so that you can become successful in your careers, you can be successful in your home, you can be successful in your passion. And one of the things that I was talking about was all those standards. So when you're creating these goals, it's like creating your mission. So create a mission statement for each one of these things. You know, it's my mission this month, is I'm going to accomplish this, that's my mission. And how am I going to do it, create those standards, create those things that you're going to do every day, or every other day, or however many however, it works within your schedule, but create those standards that are going to be that I'm going to do this. So for example, my passion for a while was learning the classical guitar. My standard was, I was going to practice it three times a week, for a half an hour. That was my standard. You know, I wanted to, you know, other things, some of the personal development was, I wanted to read a personal development book every single month, and start to put that stuff into play. And so it was okay. You know, I ride my bike or drive to work, I'm gonna get the audiobook, and I'm going to listen to it during the audiobook. And as I'm learning these things, I'm going to start putting one or two aspects into my life and creating things. So those are the kinds of things those you've got the goal, and then you've got the standards, the actual things you do every single day on this sheet, here, let me show you, let me pull it up. Okay, so here we have it right here, there we go.
So you'll put your name, you'll put your date, and you create your goals, then you also put the standards that you put on there. And as you can see, there are a scale from one to 10. So every single week, what you need to do is rate yourself. How did I do on my standards? Was I consistent on my standards? From one to 10? Okay. And so every single week, you kind of move for that? And then you also look at how close am I towards my end goal? What is that mission? What is that end mission that I'm trying to achieve? How close am I into that? Okay, and the last thing is the signature. Okay? So you're not just saying it, you're not just thinking about it, you're writing it down. And you've got to actually print this out. And then you sign it. And then you find somebody else who is going to help you who is going to be your accountability coach, the person who's going to ask you, how are you doing? Ah, you didn't do so well this week. Okay, why did you not do so well, and kind of work that way. So this gets the the, the vision, your mission, you know, it gets three aspects that you're wanting to achieve, and it gets somebody else to sign it for you as well or sign it with you so that you can become accountable so that you can achieve this goal. So go ahead and go on to it's www dot cooking. physics.com/three-four-thirty. And I really this kind of concepts. These goals have really helped me in my life. They've helped me kind of really starting to broaden out who I am as a person. They started to help me to love what I do. The have really brought more happiness and joy my Life, and it has spilled over onto my family and to other things, I'm able to do a lot more things now that I used to be able to do. And I'm still working full time. So go ahead, go on here, it's a free, it's a free guide. It helps me immensely, it's got little instructions, little guide guidelines as far as how to use it right there on the, on the sheet so that you can see how it goes. Share with your friends, if it works well for you. Because I know that as you progress as you build that vision, and see that horizon and really kind of start loving what you could become. And as you create those missions, as you build those goals, and as you understand why it is you're trying to get there, your purpose, then those standards, those little steps, you know, they're not going to seem so difficult. As long as you're consistently going in the right direction. As long as you're continuing to build that clarity, like I talked about last week, building that clarity, having that support system around you, and learning and growing and developing. You will have a wonderful life, you'll be happy. And you'll be able to share that joy of loving and life with others around you. You know, it's it's great to come into a kitchen where everybody's happy. Everybody loves being there. Everybody loves their life. versus going into a kitchen where everybody is upset, angry, frustrated, they feel defeated. And I feel like there's no getting out of working in the restaurant industry. Because working in professional kitchens is hard. I understand that. I've been doing it for 20 years. But I also know that it can be fun. It can be enjoyable, it can be a place where you look forward to going. No, it doesn't have to be 100% what you love, or doesn't have to be the only thing that you look forward to. I look forward to going to work as much as I look forward to coming home and not having to work. I look forward to the weekends for all the fun things that I can do. And be with family and be with friends. You know, going camping and things like that. Now, weekends, you know what I mean? Not Friday, Saturday, you know, whatever two days off that you've got. But understanding that, you know, allies are difficult, but they can also be fun. So that's what I'm trying to help other people understand. help everybody understand that. Working in professional kitchens is a lot of fun. As long as you approach it in the right way. As long as you maintain those visions, those goals or standards and surround yourself with other people who love learning who love growing, you will have a wonderful life.
