108 - Building Clarity
Aug 21, 2023Hello, my name is Nick Brown, not the founder of cooking physics. And you're watching My Thursday, live teaching. Cooking physics provides quality instruction to professional chefs in both organization and leadership. And I enable chefs to be happy and to be successful in their careers by building a culture of growth, development and learning in their workplace. So today, I'm going to be talking about how to build your, you know, build your clarity, and why it is so important to have clarity when you are, you know, setting your goals and moving forward in your career. So, what exactly is clarity? And how do you build it. So everybody's talks about how you've got to have clarity, you've got to have a vision, you've got to have that, you know, destination that you're going to. And that's kind of what clarity is, but clarity, I feel like is a little bit more than just having that vision or that destination. It's also having a very clear idea on how to get there. So this last week, I was actually camping with the scouts. And, you know, one of the things we always talked about was camping as is we're talking about, you know how to use a compass, how to use a map, how to use the, the skills, you have to be able to find out where you're at and where you want to go. And it just kind of clicked to me that, you know, that's a lot like how I have built my clarity towards this business. So I just kind of want to put that into perspective that way. So when you're building clarity, you're not only finding out the destination, having that destination, having that vision, having that clear idea of where do you want to go is crucial. Because that gives you the hope that gives you the really the the drive and the motivation to keep on moving when things get tough. And the clearer that you have that vision, the easier it is for you to overcome challenges. You know, and it's not only just the feeling, not only just being, you know, arriving there, but also having that clear vision of how it's going to feel. And who are you going to be there with and what's going to be happening. Because if that vision is just you, and you're the only part of that vision, there's a good chance that when you get there, you will be alone, and you will be the only one there. So when you're creating that vision, include your friends include your family, how are they going to be? What's what's, what's the whole picture that's going to be and the clearer that you can have that is, the easier it is to be able to get to that destination. But it's not only just the destination that you need to worry about. Because I don't care how great you are. If you say I want to get to, let's say, mountain Denali, I want to reach the top of Mount Denali. Okay. All right, sweet. Now, which way do I go? I don't know. I don't know where I'm at. You know, if you don't know where you're at right now, if you don't know, your strengths, if you don't know your weaknesses, if you don't know, kind of your situation that you're currently in. It's very difficult to have that huge goal ahead of you and not even know how to get out of where you're at. So the first step is Always to start looking internally, start thinking about yourself, you know, think about your mindset, do you really believe that you can reach there, work on that until you know that you can reach it. You know, start putting yourself and realizing who you are as a person, and who the person is you want to become. And if you've got those two things, you now have the starting point, you got the destination, you know, the direction that you need to be leaving, you need to be heading out. Name. But great, that's, that's great. Okay, I'm here, I want to get there. Let's go. And if you just start moving, and you don't have any kind of a map, you don't know how long it's going to take you to get there. You don't know of any of the obstacles, major obstacles that are going to get you there that are going to be in the way you don't know, the easiest path. If you think, okay, it's just, it's just in general direction of north and you start walking north, it's not, it's going to be difficult to reach your destination without having that map. Now, definitely, if you're going and you don't quite have the map yet, that's okay, get going in that general direction, start, start moving, you're not going to get any further away by going in in the general direction, you're going to start moving. So getting that map is is kind of like starting to understand, you know, you need to start getting the education that you need. Getting that map could be you know, any courses that you need to take any role models that you need to look towards, you know, any books that you can read, and other people that you can talk to, you know, as you're as you're moving along, start getting some people that you've talked to, you know, Hey, did you know, so? How do you have any idea how he got to where he was at having those role models and, and learning from them, learning from the courses, learning from, you know, just education books, and all that kind of stuff that really starts to begin to get your map. And now that you have that map, you can start to see the major obstacles that they had to overcome. And you can you can avoid those obstacles. They can teach you things like, you know, Hey, there's this huge ravine, even though you want to go north, you've got to go east for about, you know, three miles to be able to trail and make it to where you need to go. So as you're moving along, and growing and learning, constantly refining that map, refining that vision, and really building that clarity of who you are, where you want to go, and how you want to get there. But one of the things that they always say, in scouting, anytime you leave, anytime you go somewhere, you've got to have your buddy, you've got to have that second person, you've got to have that group with you. Because that group is going to help you keep you safe. That group was going to be able to help you overcome the challenges that happen, that nobody knows about. That group of people that that close knit group of people, that's kind of like your compass. They allow you to buy by talking with him by having them with you. You can always look to that compass and be like, Am I following the right direction, talking to your people that you trust, am I going in the right direction. That support group will guide you through each step of the way. They will help you get back on track. If you start to get distracted by something else, they help you to really focus and to continue on that path. So as you learn and as you grow, you've got your destination that you want to go to. And you've got you're where you're sitting right now. And you know the kind of person that you want to become, you know, the kind of the, this, you know, where you want to get to, and you know now through your role models through looking the map at all of the challenges that are going to get there. And then you've got your support group, you've got your friends that are going to help you along the way and help keep you on track. Having all that stuff together. That's what builds your clarity. Even though you may have a very clear path and direction, nature, always throws curveballs That's why you've got your friends. Because as Nature throws curveballs, either your equipment fails, or a massive storm comes into into play. You know, and other things like that, that that just life happens. You've got the tools that you need to be able to circumvent that a bridge may get destroyed. And you were planning on just making that little trip, that jaunt over, you know, 200 feet over the ravine. Now, you have no way across the ravine a new you've got to now you know, head down and find another way. You've got the map, you've got your destination, you know where you're at, and you've got your compass, you've got your friends, and everything like that, that is going to help you and support you. So building clarity, really is important. Because that helps you overcome all of those obstacles. Knowing where you're going, knowing how you're getting getting there. And having that support. there to help you out. You can do amazing things. I know this is a little short one. But it's very important that we understand the how much clarity determines where you're going to go in life. If you don't know where you're going, where you want to go, it doesn't really matter. And you're just going to wander around. But having clarity, you can always move towards that goal. It may take you five years, it may take you 10 years, it may only take you a week, you may find that all of a sudden, there's a flight, that's a direct flight from where you are to where you want to go. And it's only 50 bucks. And you get on that just so lucky. But because you know where you're going because you have that clarity, you can take advantage of those luck situations.
